Aspirant

Timber, acrylic boxes

600 x 1800 x 500mm

The Nest installation space 2026

Following on from lessons learned when creating Dispossessions 2, I've been very interested in the deconstruction of landscapes and - in the case of Aspirant - objects. These things are broken down so that their sections can fit inside acrylic boxes, and then they are reconstructed.

Aspirant is an old timber ladder that appealed to me both sculpturally as well as being a metaphor for aspiration, hope, direction. My aim in placing it, broken down, inside the acrylic boxes is that the the negative space around the ladder becomes as much a sculptural element as does the ladder itself. There is a rather claustrophobic feel to this piece that I hope allows for an exploration of the dialectics of hope and aspiration - namely their polar oppsites: failure and stasis.
